Access/manipulate/run tasks and launch configurations specified in tasks.vs.json and launch.vs.json

As the title indicates, I'd like to access user-defined tasks and launch configurations from a VS extension but am drawing blank in learning if and how these tasks are exposed. Any pointers appreciated, thanks!
