Here we need to give various ways of making table of contents

Some remarks:

we should make a clear distinction between numbering of chapters/sections/subsections (which is also, but not only, a TOC issue) and numbering problems/exercises/questions and numbering theorems/propositions/definitions.

getting numbering in PDF and online consistent is impossible (as far as I know). Because one of the great features of Ximera is that you can collect the same activities in lots of xourses, they will have different chapter numbers in each xourse. As far as I know, there is no support in Ximera to have this numbering of/in online dependencies depend on the xourse in which it happens to be.
KULeuven solution: online you never get complete numbers, only the last part: not 2.3.1 but 3.1 (or 1, depending on the case).

Terminology LaTeX:
In 'article', one has \part \section \subsection (NO \chapter)
In 'report' and 'book' one does have \chapter

Terminology Ximera
A documentclass{ximera} is called an activity and in can (presumably) have \sections and \subsections (but probably should never have \parts.

A documentclass{xourse} is a course. It consists of a list a 'activities', that can be inserted either as 'chapter' or as 'section'

An activity is itself fully unaware of it being included an a 'chapter' or 'section'.

UNFORTUNATELY, (Ximera-)'chapterstyle' is implemented as (LaTeX-)'section',
and (Ximera-)'sectionstyle' is implemented as (LaTeX-) subsection.

The concept \part was not used by OSU_Ximera, but has been introduced bu KULeuven for extra grouping in large courses of (chapterstyle-)activities in 'part' or 'modules' or 'chapters' .

Note that student never see the word 'Chapter' in OSU_Ximera (as far as I know)

Yes - no \part in activity. Activities should have \maketitle

practice (activity without \maketitle) and should be included with \practice

concept \part was not used by OSU_Ximera

\part is respected by OSU Ximera, but not required
