# Dumping Psion netBook BootLoader

The Psion netBook has no embedded OS, like 5mx PRO. It has a 2 MB BootLoader chip on its Personality module.
It's a Flash chip (may be Sharp or Intel), attached to the CS0 signal (so available at 0x00000000).

<p align="center">
<img src="Pictures/pmflash.jpg" alt="netBook PM flash chip" width="350">
</p>

Normally, there is no access to the BootLoader chip from the OS, as it's not MMU-mapped.
A [special version](OS.IMG) of the standard netbook OS (Build 450) is modified to be able to dump this BootLoader Flash chip.

<p align="center">

The BootLoader version can be seen when it's **idle** (waiting for a CF or YMODEM transmission).

If you have a machine with a BootLoader different from those listed [here](/README.md#psion-netbook),
please dump it using the following steps:

1. Run ***PsiROMx*** (embedded);
![PsiROMx](Pictures/psiromx.png)

2. Open ***Advanced options***;
3. Set ***Start address*** at **51200000**;
4. Set ***Size (KB)*** to **2048**, ***End address*** must be at **51400000**;
![Advanced options](Pictures/psiroaddr.png)

5. Select ***Save ROM***, set name (for example: **sys$bl.bin**);
![Save ROM](Pictures/psironam.png)

6. Wait until dumping is done;
![Dumping](Pictures/psirord.png) ![Dumped](Pictures/psirodn.png)

7. Check the file size, it must be **2 MB** or **2097152 Bytes**;
![File properties](Pictures/sysblprop.png)

8. If all is ok, offer your file to this repository.

<br>

You can also dump your **EEPROM** (128 Bytes). Unpack additional software by installing **Special Tools.SIS**, then run **Show EEPROM.exe** (at **C:\\**) to list your EEPROM's contents to the screen.
Take a photo or make an MBM screenshot (**Shift + Ctrl + Fn + S**) and offer it to [bs0dd@bs0dd.net](<mailto:bs0dd@bs0dd.net?subject=Psion 5mx PRO EEPROM>).

***For advanced users***: there is also an **ARLO** tool (Linux loader for Psions) in the Special Tools pack. It's not configured to run Linux, but it's included due to the advanced and expert modes functionality. You can use it for reading and researching some memory sections. **Enjoy!**

Installing netBook software from the PC
=======================================

It is necessary to install Psiwin, the PC-Psion communication software, before attempting to install the netBook software from the PC.

The netBook comes with a full operating system, including a full set of built-in applications. An image of this OS is on this CD. Also on this CD is an image of an operating system without the built-in applications.

These images can be installed on the netBook from the PC. To do this, ensure that the netBook and the PC are connected, and at the same baud rate - see the PsiWin documentation for details of how to do this. Remove all sources of power from the netBook (external, main battery, and back-up battery), and all CF and PC cards. After several seconds, return power to the netBook. The netBook will reset itself, and ask for either a bootable CF card to be inserted, or for the Rominst application to be started.

To run the Rominst application, select the full or basic OS from the "System S/W" tab, and follow the instructions. The OS will take about twenty minutes to download, after which the netBook will automatically boot itself. Note that the Rominst application contains a connection engine - PsiWin should therefore be shut down before attempting to run Rominst.

It is also possible to install any of the built-in applications to the netBook. To do this, simply connect the netBook to the PC (and ensure that the baud rates are correct), and select the appropriate application from the "System S/W" tab. The application will be installed.

Please refer to the Psiwin documentation in case of any difficulties.

Installing netBook software from the CF card
============================================

It is also possible to install either the OS or any of the built-in apps by CF card. To install the OS from CF card, first obtain a CF card with the correct OS image. Then, follow the netBook reset instructions above. When prompted, insert the bootable CF card.

To install any of the built-in apps from CF card, insert the CF card (with the SIS file saved on it), and run the SIS file from the system screen.

Psion netBook BootLoader.
Version 011 UK

The bootloader is the program stored in netBook's Personality Module (2MB Flash chip).
It loads the OS into RAM from the CF card or via RS232 (YMODEM protocol).
Actually, unlike 5mx PRO, this is a "micro"-EPOC distributive with
a minimal set of the files + some testing utilities (can they be called?).
Internal EPOC version - 0.01(0).
Placed in LH28F160S3T-L10A (1M x 16 Flash) at 0x00000000.
Date code: 08/08/00.

Psion MalayBook
Version: 1.05 (281) – English (UK) – ASCII (Release 158)

The MalayBook is a version of the Psion netBook with slightly different hardware and software.
There's no official name for this model: it's also referred to as the E-Book, E-Buku (in Bahasa Malaysia), mNetbook, Mbook, or Schoolbook.
Like the standard Psion netBook, the MalayBook runs the EPOC version 5 operating system.

Several thousand MalayBooks were produced for use by students in Malaysia, in an experimental program to replace printed textbooks with netBooks.
The project was a joint venture called One Ed Dot Com (formerly at http://www.one-ed.com.my), consisting of Ericsson (Psion's "local technology partner") and several public and private entities in Malaysia.

The differences between a MalayBook and a standard netBook seem to be limited to a different ROM chip which includes a different bootloader, and a slightly different OS.img (operating system version).
The MalayBook bootloader will only load the MalayBook OS.img, not the standard netBook OS.img available from Psion or Symbian.
