- Around line 298-335: The sync failure cleanup after sync_users_batched must be
serialized with the per-node sync lock and guarded by a node identity check.
Before calling pg_node.stop(), reacquire the lock, verify
node_manager.get_node(db_node.id) is pg_node, and stop only in that case;
preserve the existing NodeAPIError propagation.

node_manager.sync_users_batched to catch asyncio.CancelledError separately,
shield the identity-checked stop_node_if_current cleanup from cancellation, and
re-raise the original cancellation afterward; preserve the existing NodeAPIError
handling for ordinary exceptions and add coverage cancelling after the first
batch.

- Line 321: Wrap the awaited batched PasarGuardNode.start() call in cancellation
handling so cancellation triggers the same shielded, identity-checked cleanup
used by the existing batched-sync path, including stop_node_if_current, before
re-raising the cancellation. Add a regression test that cancels after Start
dispatch but before start() returns and verifies remote cleanup occurs.

A WireGuard Start with at least WIREGUARD_BATCHED_START_THRESHOLD users sends an empty peer list and then applies the snapshot in batches of WIREGUARD_START_BATCH_SIZE through sync_users_chunked. Smaller WireGuard starts and Xray starts keep the full user list in Start. On a failed batch the node is stopped while it is still the manager's current object; if an edit replaced it between Start and the batches it is left alone. Cancelling the start mid-batch stops the current node.

Brings in PasarGuard#903 (lifecycle preemption of user syncs) and the rest of dev. Conflict in app/node/__init__.py: - update_node: keep PasarGuard#903's structure (early unchanged-signature return before the lock, preemption only on a connection change, re-check under the lock) and this branch's existing_signature read under the reader lock, which feeds remote_stop=existing_signature != signature. - keep this branch's _sync_user_batches helper and PasarGuard#903's _sync_users_to_node (node may be None, lock taken per batch, tracked for preemption); the shared-store branch from this side is already inside PasarGuard#903's version.
sync_users_batched holds the per-node lock for every batch of a large WireGuard start, so an address change or a removal of the node had to wait for the whole peer set. Run it in a tracked task through the same helper as sync_full (_run_preemptible_sync): a connection change or a removal cancels only the batches, never the connect task that awaits them, and the caller gets UserSyncPreemptedError. _start_or_attach_node maps that to NodeAPIError(-4), which connect_node treats as a skip: the preempting operation already decides whether the old backend is stopped (remote_stop) and reconnects the node, so the preempted start neither stops it again nor writes an error status. A metadata-only edit still waits for the batched start to finish and then swaps the bridge object without a remote Stop.
Summary
Editing an active node used to force a Stop/Start cycle even for metadata-only changes. On WireGuard nodes with thousands of peers, a real restart also embedded the complete peer list in the lifecycle request, which could exceed the startup timeout.
