Summary

Part of #582 (its "Traffic by users" section).

The statistics page shows traffic per node, core and admin, but not which users used it or on which nodes. The only per-user view is the usage modal of a single user, and sorting the users list by used_traffic gives the current cycle, not a period.

This adds a "Traffic by Users" card to the statistics page, under the traffic usage chart:

  • One row per user, ranked by traffic in the selected period: rank, username, a horizontal bar split by node (with nodes.stats), traffic and share of the period total. Bar length is relative to the top user.
  • Node segments use the same colours and order as the traffic usage chart. Usage rows without a node, and node ids missing from the node list, go to a muted "Unknown node" segment.
  • Hovering or focusing a row shows the user's per-node bytes and share (top 6 nodes).
  • With a node selected in the page's node selector, the ranking is for that node and the bars are single-colour.
  • Same period shortcuts, custom range and admin filter as the traffic usage chart. The card shows the admin filter only to admins with all-scope users.read and admins.read_simple; custom ranges cover whole picked days. The header shows the period total and the number of users with traffic.
  • The first 10 users, then up to 10 more per click, up to 100; the footer shows how many users and how much traffic are below the list.
  • Users that are not active get a status icon next to the name.
  • Clicking a row opens the user's usage modal on the card's period and custom range, and on the card's node for admins who can read all users (UsageModal gets an optional initialView prop; existing callers are unchanged).
  • The card is shown only to admins with users.read; the page passes the flag in, as it does for nodes.stats.

API, GET /api/users/usage/top:

  • Returns the top limit users (1–100, default 10) by traffic in [start, end), with the period total and the number of users with traffic. Default range is the last 30 days.
  • Filters: node_id, admin. group_by_node adds a per-node split to each user (nodes: [{node_id, total_traffic}], node_id 0 for rows without a node).
  • Scoping: users.read. An admin without all-scope users.read sees only own users and gets 403 for any other admin, even with admins.read, because the list exposes usernames (stricter than /api/users/usage, which returns only sums). node_id and group_by_node are ignored without nodes.stats.
  • A separate endpoint, because a ranked list with username and status is a different shape from the bucketed series of /api/users/usage.

Local panel (SQLite): 35 users under 2 admins, 3 nodes, 122,600 node_user_usages rows over 35 days Ranks, bytes, shares, per-node splits, the period total and the footer match a direct SQL sum for 1w, 3d, a custom range, a single node and the admin filter; an own-scope admin sees only own users

Tests ran on SQLite locally; PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, MySQL and MariaDB are left to CI (test-database-migrations.yml).

Response time on that DB (median of 5 warm runs, ms). Like /api/users/usage, the cost grows with the number of usage rows in the range:

1m all 56.8 83.5 99.6
40d (all data) all 67.2 102.7 120.4

Notes for reviewers

  • The grouped rows are joined to users: on SQLite the panel does not enable PRAGMA foreign_keys and user deletion keeps node_user_usages, so without the join the period total would count users the list cannot show.
  • No upload/download split: node_user_usages stores only the sum.
  • The modal's hourly buckets start at the next full hour while the card sums raw rows, so for the 2h–24h shortcuts the modal can miss up to the first ~50 minutes (a large share for 2h/4h, ~3.5% for 24h).
  • The card passes the whole-day custom range to the modal, so a 3-day range opens on daily buckets; the same pick made inside the modal gives hourly ones on dev.
  • In time zones with DST, ranges crossing a DST change (and "All time" while today's offset differs from 2000-01-01's) return 400 ("Start and end dates must have the same timezone") for every statistics chart on dev, this card included; fixed in fix(dashboard): send chart ranges with one UTC offset across DST #989.
  • Touches the same files as open perf(statistics): reduce query load on large installs #865 (app/db/crud/user.py, app/operation/user.py); the new code is in new functions plus import lines, and both files merge with perf(statistics): reduce query load on large installs #865 without conflicts. The closest perf(statistics): reduce query load on large installs #865 hunks are the app.db.crud.user import list in app/operation/user.py and the body of get_user_count_metric_stats, right after the new function in app/db/crud/user.py.

Walkthrough

The change adds an API that returns ranked user traffic totals, with optional node breakdowns and access restrictions. The dashboard adds a traffic card with date and filter controls, ranked user rows, and links to usage details.

Changes

User Traffic Totals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Usage totals contracts and aggregation
app/models/stats.py, app/models/user.py, app/db/crud/user.py, tests/api/test_usage_functions_timezone.py
Adds request and response models, aggregates traffic by user and optionally by node, and tests ranking, totals, grouping, and start-inclusive/end-exclusive time boundaries.
Usage endpoint and access rules
app/operation/user.py, app/routers/dependencies/user.py, app/routers/dependencies/__init__.py, app/routers/user.py, tests/api/test_usage_functions_timezone.py
Adds the query dependency and endpoint. The operation applies admin scope rules before retrieving totals. Tests cover scoped results, forbidden owner requests, and the maximum limit.
Dashboard traffic card and API integration
dashboard/src/service/api/index.ts, dashboard/src/features/statistics/components/users-traffic-card.tsx, dashboard/src/features/statistics/components/statistics-charts.tsx, dashboard/src/features/users/dialogs/usage-modal.tsx, dashboard/public/statics/locales/*.json
Adds API types and query helpers, renders ranked user traffic with optional node breakdowns, and opens the usage modal with the selected date range and node. Adds translated labels in four locales.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 43da0

The new Traffic by Users card can keep showing an outdated rolling window after automatic refreshes. It can also open a user from previous filter results, and it shows an error to admins without user read access. Address the stale range before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Advance shortcut ranges during automatic refresh.

For a shortcut such as 1h, useMemo keeps the initial start and end dates until the shortcut changes. The five-minute refetch therefore requests the same window indefinitely. Advance the clock on a timer and include it in the query-range calculation so the card continues to show the selected rolling period. (react.dev)

Kept as is: every time-range chart on the statistics page on dev (all-nodes-stacked-bar-chart, costume-bar-chart, user-counts-chart, user-sub-update-pie-chart, area-costume-chart in its historical view) computes its range in useMemo with no clock in the deps, so its periodic refetch reuses the same window. Fixing it for one card would make it diverge; it belongs in a separate PR covering all charts.

@mark-avd, thanks for the context. Keeping this card consistent with the existing statistics charts is reasonable. The stale-window concern remains valid, but a separate PR should update the charts together.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for that shared change?

Learning: In PasarGuard/panel, the React statistics charts all-nodes-stacked-bar-chart, costume-bar-chart, user-counts-chart, user-sub-update-pie-chart, and area-costume-chart in its historical view compute time ranges with useMemo without a clock dependency. Their periodic refetches reuse the same window. dashboard/src/features/statistics/components/users-traffic-card.tsx follows this shared behavior. Changes to rolling-window refresh behavior should be coordinated across the statistics charts rather than applied only to UsersTrafficCard.

- Rows from the previous period, node or admin can no longer be opened or show their tooltip until the new ranking arrives
- Admins who can open statistics but not read users no longer see an error card
- Regenerate the API client on top of dev's orval config; the only addition is the users usage top endpoint
