feat(insights): local libSQL collector, local build strategy, sampling and devtools panel - #9391
Decentralized Qwik Insights: record sessions into your own libSQL/SQLite (or Turso) database and build the bundling strategy from it, including in dev, instead of relying on the central insights.qwik.dev service.
Sampling + lazy tracker: the inline script samples once per tab session (default 5% in a build, every session in dev; sampleRate to change) and buffers qsymbol events. Sampled sessions lazily load a content-hashed build/qwik-insights-pinger-<hash>.js, which beacons symbol timings and errors.
Local collector (@qwik.dev/core/insights/collector): handleInsightsBeacon() for a catch-all Qwik Router onPost route. It validates and size-limits beacons, optionally accepts only the app's own key, records error beacons, and upserts bucketed edges/routes atomically. file: URLs use node:sqlite, falling back to the optional @libsql/client peer on Node < 22.5. Remote URLs (Turso, self-hosted libSQL) use @libsql/client and also work on the edge adapters (Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare): Node modules load only for local files, and dbUrl/authToken can come from the request's env.
Local strategy: with db (or QWIK_INSIGHTS_DB_URL) the vite plugin computes { manual, prefetch } from the latest 100 builds, with route prefetch ordered by frequency. In dev, beacons are recorded by the dev server itself; a build needs postUrl and otherwise silently leaves the tracker out, so nothing goes to the central service by accident.
Devtools Insights tab: shows apps, symbol edges and route symbols from that DB, ranked per app.
Docs: the labs Insights page covers sampling, a settings reference, the collector route, and setups by deployment:
a solo developer with a static site, building from dev sessions and a committed q-insights.json;
a team with its own server;
serverless and edge platforms with Turso;
keeping preview data apart from production.
To do (review findings)
Broken intended behavior
1. Default DB path (file:.qwik/insights.db) silently records nothing when .qwik/ is missing, and the failed open is cached until restart; the collector e2e passes anyway (only checks 200)
2. The plugin db option never reaches the collector or devtools (each resolves the DB differently: option/env vs env+cwd vs env+vite root)
3. db set without postUrl beacons to insights.qwik.dev (also in dev) while the strategy reads the empty local DB
4. Error beacons go to ${postUrl}error/, which the local collector doesn't handle (404)
5. Concurrent beacons create duplicate edge/route rows (no unique index, non-atomic update-then-insert, no transaction)
6. Pinger has a fixed unhashed name under the year-long immutable /build/* cache, so an upgrade pairs a stale pinger with a new gate
7. node:sqlite needs Node 22.5+ (unflagged 22.13+) but engines allow ^20.3.0; on older Node the collector fails silently
8. CI lint fails: 10 qwik-local/loop-style errors in the insights sources
Medium
9. Sampling is per page load, not per session (each full load re-rolls)
10. Existing central-service users silently drop to 5% of the data; changeset doesn't say so
11. Local strategy diverges from the central service: aggregates every manifest forever (central: latest 100), prefetch symbols unordered and uncapped (central: by frequency, limit 1000)
12. A fresh project's build creates a 0-byte DB file and prints a "no such table: edges" stack trace
13. Collector does no input validation (NaN → SQL error, 1 MB route stored, any API key accepted) on a public endpoint
14. Labs Insights docs don't cover sampleRate, postUrl, db, the collector or the env vars
15. Docs /insights-collect/ route ships to Cloudflare, where node:sqlite doesn't exist
Minor (devtools)
16. Devtools duplicates the core DB adapter
17. @libsql/client is a hard devtools dependency though described as optional
18. Edge list takes 1,000 arbitrary rows then sorts; not merged across manifests or filtered per app
19. Error messages aren't redacted; tab reuses another tab's icon
Verification
Unit: pnpm vitest run packages/qwik/src/insights packages/devtools/plugin/src/insights: 53/53. New tests were checked to fail without their fix where practical. That includes an edge-runtime test where node:fs, node:path, node:url and node:sqlite throw on import and a beacon is recorded through a mocked remote client.
Edge bundle: the collector built with the workerd condition has no top-level node: imports (only lazy ones for local files) and picks libSQL's fetch-based web.js client.
E2E: insights-collect.e2e.ts (chromium): 3/3, including the error beacon. The route reports whether the beacon was recorded.
Docs site in dev with QWIK_INSIGHTS_DB_URL and no collector route, driven in Chromium:
the hashed pinger loads;
the sessionStorage roll persists;
symbol and error beacons return 200;
rows land in applications, manifests, edges, routes and errors.
Production builds of small probe apps:
a fresh project logs "no insights collected yet" and creates no file;
with data, the strategy lands in q-insights.json;
client and server builds agree on the hashed pinger name;
with no DB (as in CI), the build falls back to a committed q-insights.json, and <Insights /> renders nothing without warning.
The labs page renders with working in-page links, and its code blocks render inside the numbered steps.
eslint, prettier, syncpack, pnpm api.update, and tsc on packages/qwik are clean.
Devtools builds and type-checks for insights. One pre-existing parseQwikCode type error in rpc/index.ts is also present without this PR.
Not verified on a real edge deploy or against a live Turso database.
Known limits / follow-ups
No rate limiting: the collector is a public, unauthenticated endpoint. Validation, size caps and the optional key filter bound each beacon, but not request volume.
Old dev databases: a DB written by the earlier version of this branch may already hold duplicate rows, which makes the new unique index fail to create. Delete it and start fresh. Nothing has been released with the old schema.
Commit shape: the fixes are separate commits on top of the 4 feature commits so each one is reviewable. They can be folded into those commits before merge.
Qwik Insights can collect session data and uncaught JavaScript errors in a local SQLite/libSQL database or a remote database, including during development and on edge runtimes.
Collected data can be used to build optimized bundle strategies. Configure sampling, beacon destinations, and database connections; sampling defaults to 5% in production and all sessions in development.
A new DevTools Insights panel displays collected applications, symbol relationships, and routes.
The inline gate now only samples the session (default 5%), buffers qsymbol
events and imports the pinger chunk from q:base. The full tracker ships as
a separate qwik-insights-pinger.js asset emitted into the client build.

Adds @qwik.dev/core/insights/collector with handleInsightsBeacon/writeInsights.
Local file: URLs use node:sqlite; remote Turso URLs load the optional
@libsql/client on demand.

With `db` (or QWIK_INSIGHTS_DB_URL) set, qwikInsights computes the bundling
strategy from the local libSQL DB instead of the central service, injects
the tracker in dev (sampling every session) and serves the pinger from the
dev server. The docs site opts in via QWIK_INSIGHTS_DB_URL.

New vite-only Insights tab that reads apps, symbol edges and route
symbols from the libSQL/SQLite DB the insights collector writes to.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
This change adds sampled Insights tracking, a libSQL/SQLite collector, local database-based build strategy computation, and a Devtools panel for collected data. It also updates the Insights plugin, package exports, documentation, and tests.
The adapter supports local SQLite and remote libSQL databases. The collector validates and records application, symbol, route, and error beacons. Package exports, build and API generation, and unit and end-to-end tests cover the collector.
Insights now uses a sampling gate and loads the pinger dynamically. The pinger processes symbol activations and sends symbol and error beacons. Tests cover sampling, queue processing, and timing buckets.
Vite collection and local strategy .changeset/insights-decentralized-strategy.md, packages/qwik/src/insights/vite/*, packages/docs/vite.config.ts
The Vite plugin adds sampling, pinger delivery, local development collection, and optional database-based production strategy computation. Plugin and strategy tests cover the configuration and data paths.
Devtools adds an RPC method to read database insights and an Insights tab that displays application, edge, and route data, with loading, error, and empty states.
Configuration and usage documentation packages/docs/src/routes/docs/labs/insights/index.mdx, packages/docs/src/routes/api/qwik-insights/api.json, packages/docs/src/routes/api/qwik-insights/index.mdx
The docs describe the Insights component configuration, sampling, self-hosted collection, and the optional InsightsError.publicApiKey field.

The change is mergeable with owner awareness of bounded limitations. Localhost file URLs can select the wrong database or lose collection, and explicitly externalized Insights components can emit misleading warnings. Existing telemetry-loss, strategy-quality, and coverage limitations remain suitable for focused follow-up.

The default file:.qwik/insights.db failed to open without .qwik/, and the
rejected open stayed cached, so the collector silently dropped everything
until restart. handleInsightsBeacon now reports whether it recorded, so the
e2e can tell.

Chunked requests carry no content-length, so the collector buffered the
whole body before checking its size. Read it in chunks and give up past
the limit; the dev-server collector now streams into the same reader.

…setup
libSQL errors can echo a token-bearing DB URL, and the collector and
strategy logged them raw. A failed schema setup also left its adapter
open while the next beacon opened another.

The upsert kept the first beacon's interaction flag, so a later
interactive activation of the same edge was never recorded.

A DB shared with other apps produced an empty strategy for this one and
overwrote q-insights.json.

Dev only injected the tracker with a local DB, so a collector set via
postUrl alone never saw dev sessions.

A percent-encoded path (e.g. %20 for a space) opened a different file
than the one named. The plugin now reuses the same parser instead of
its own copy.

Error beacons carried no key, so a collector configured with
publicApiKey still recorded other apps' errors under its own key. The
pinger now sends the key with errors too.

All-pairs clustering over dense n×n vectors took minutes, and memory to
match, once an app had a few thousand symbols. Cluster only the 1,000
most-used symbols, skip pairs already in one cluster, and stop each
distance sum once it is out of range.

It only looked at application records, so rows from several keys could
appear unlabeled when the applications table had one entry.

CodeRabbit review: 11 of its 20 threads are fixed in this push, each answered on its thread. The other 9 stay as they are, with the reasons on their threads:
Parity with the central service: unreachable-symbol vectors, interaction roots and alternate-path propagation. The local strategy deliberately mirrors packages/insights/src/stats/edges.ts, so those changes belong in a follow-up for both.
Low value for the code they'd add: beacon batching, trimming the gate's raw queue, gate-level error capture, and per-server DB URL scoping.
Doesn't apply: the pinger path (qwik-vite always emits lazy chunks under build/) and migrating duplicate rows (that schema was never released).
Nitpicks (in the review body, not threads):
Added: an independent-symbol assertion in the clustering test.
Not added:
a generateBundle emission test and a browser test for the gate-to-pinger handoff, since a probe production build and a real-browser dev run already cover them;
DB-row assertions in the collector e2e, which would need an isolated DB for the shared e2e server; the route now returns whether the beacon was recorded, and unit tests check the rows;
a mocked-adapter test for devtools remote errors, since redaction is unit-tested in core (describeInsightsDbError).
The de-duplication key still used the raw error text, so an echoed token
stayed in memory even though the logged message was redacted.

Qwik's Vercel, Netlify and Cloudflare adapters run on edge runtimes, where
the collector failed to load: it imported node:fs, node:path and node:url
up front and read process.env. Load the Node modules only for local DB
files, and accept the auth token as an option so routes can pass values
from the request's env.

…n purpose
A build with db but no postUrl leaves the tracker out by design, yet the
component warned about missing config on every server render, once per
page in a static build.

Covers a static site built from dev sessions, a team running its own
server, and serverless or edge platforms with Turso, plus the settings
each one needs and keeping preview data apart.

Windows drive-letter handling.

@qwik.dev/core/insights components, rather than relying only on Vite replacing
the define; preserve the behavior that intentionally disabled Insights renders
quietly without a missing-postUrl warning.
