What

research-setup entry for 2026-11-02: tooling for (a) editable diagrams that export to PNG for a Quarto→Word report and (b) animated diagrams for a project video (TB2 of the concurrency course, aire-distribuido).

Candidate Verdict
draw.io official plugin + MCP (jgraph/drawio-mcp, ★5.7k, Apache-2.0, pushed today) adopt
Remotion Agent Skills (remotion-dev/skills, ★6.1k, pushed today) trial for the TB2 video
ManimCE + manim-skill trial for algorithm scenes only (uv add --dev manim)
claude-mermaid MCP reject (overlap: GitHub renders Mermaid, draw.io takes it as input)

Wiring

  • README: new "Global installs (optional, outside the scaffold)" table. None of these enter scripts/scaffold.sh or templates/mcp.json.tmpl: the draw.io plugin bundles its MCP, and video tooling is per project.
  • Installed on the dev laptop: drawio@drawio plugin and the Remotion skills (npx skills add remotion-dev/skills -g).

Checks

Docs only; no template rendered differently. CI lint runs as usual.

Summary by Sourcery

Document optional diagram and animation tooling decisions without adding any tools to the project scaffold.

Enhancements:

  • Document optional tooling for editable report diagrams and animated project videos, including adopted and trial candidates with installation guidance.
  • Record research evaluations and adoption decisions for draw.io, Remotion, Manim, and Mermaid tooling.

Documentation:

  • Add README guidance for global, non-scaffold installs of diagram and animation tools.

Record the 2026-11-02 evaluation in catalog/setup-options.md: adopt the official
draw.io plugin (editable .drawio with PNG/SVG export, Mermaid input), trial the
Remotion agent skills and ManimCE for project videos, reject claude-mermaid as
overlap. README gains a "Global installs" table for tools adopted per machine
rather than by the scaffold.

Reviewer's Guide

This documentation-only PR adds an optional global-install section and a dated research entry covering draw.io for editable report diagrams, Remotion for programmatic video, and Manim for algorithm animations, while rejecting a redundant Mermaid MCP and leaving project scaffolding unchanged.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Documents optional, machine-level tooling for editable report diagrams and animated project videos without adding dependencies to the scaffold.
  • Adds README installation guidance and classifies draw.io as adopted, Remotion and Manim as trials.
  • Records the research evaluation, fit, maintenance, licensing, installation, and wiring decisions for four candidates.
  • Explicitly keeps all tools out of scaffold and MCP templates because they are optional or project-specific.
