Prepare the published branch rename from master to main while preserving the develop contribution and promotion workflow. This PR targets develop as required by the repository.
The promotion Git resource selects main; its historical name bosh-deployment-master and the corresponding put step remain unchanged to retain resource identity/history. The develop resource and all deployment manifests, versions, tags and unrelated image selectors stay intact. The README names main as the consumed branch. The PR guard follows github.event.repository.default_branch, so direct PRs to the published default remain rejected on either side of the rename.
Merge this preparation into develop and let the normal tested promotion reach the published branch before cutover. The deployed promotion destination must stay on the existing branch until main exists; its operator applies the prepared main selector after native rename. Coordinate promotion and every other active writer across the window so master cannot be recreated. Do not bypass normal promotion tests or retarget this PR to master.
Concourse Git resource contract: a read-only source can follow the default by omitting branch; a write source requires an explicit branch.
Validation: git diff --check passed. Exact parsed before/after comparison confirms only the intended Git source branch selectors changed. Modern strict offline pipeline validation reports the same existing template/legacy-schema errors before and after; runtime compatibility requires operator verification. The renamed PR-guard workflow preserves its event types, empty permissions and job ID, and its condition compares the PR base with the repository default branch.
Only checked-in definitions are changed. Deployed pipeline reconfiguration and runtime checks remain operator-owned. No Concourse pause/unpause, configuration, cache clearing, resource checks, job triggers or configure-script execution were performed.
Cutover steps, consumer readiness and rollback: #539
A new GitHub Actions workflow fails pull requests that target the repository’s default branch. The previous workflow that checked pull requests targeting master is removed. The README and CI resource now use main instead of master.

The change prepares the rename to main without altering deployments. Two bounded points remain. The default-branch guard can be edited by the PR it checks, so rely on repository rules or CODEOWNERS to enforce it. The README will briefly name main before the rename is done, so keep the window between promotion and cutover short.

Explanation
The title "Prepare the default branch rename to main" matches the main change: the PR prepares the rename of the published branch from master to main. The changes include the PR guard workflow now keyed to the default branch, deletion of protect-master.yml, README and pipeline branch selectors moved to main. The title is specific and concise, and it names the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template, which asks that PRs target the develop branch. The author states that this PR targets develop as required. The description explains the changes in detail: the promotion Git resource now selects main, the README names main, and the PR guard follows github.event.repository.default_branch. It also covers validation, the operator-owned cutover steps, and links to the cutover issue and the draft community configuration. The template has no other required sections, so the description meets it.

- Around line 3-5: Make the enforcement check in the `pull_request` workflow use
a trusted definition: switch to `pull_request_target` only if repository policy
permits and the check remains metadata-only without executing pull request code;
otherwise protect the workflow definition with repository rules and CODEOWNERS.
Preserve the existing guard behavior, and ensure repository branch rules are

during the pre-cutover window: keep the existing branch wording or refer to “the
published branch,” and defer references to main until after the rename. Ensure
the README does not claim automation writes to main before the cutover.
