Prevent symlink-following chown in vcap-writable directories - #234
RuncAdapter.CreateJobPrerequisites runs as root on the host. Several of the paths it creates, chmods and chowns live in directories that are bind-mounted writable into the container and owned by vcap. Before this change those operations were all pathname-based and symlink-following:
A compromised container process running as vcap can therefore pre-plant a symlink at a path root is about to operate on, and redirect root's chown/chmod onto an arbitrary host file — for example handing the system password database to vcap. That is a container escape (CWE-59, symlink following / link-resolution privilege escalation).
Planting the symlink at an intermediate component is enough; a guard that only checks the final component still resolves the parents and follows it.
Fix
All privileged path operations now walk the path one component at a time from /, using openat/fstatat with O_NOFOLLOW and AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, and apply the final chown/chmod to the resulting descriptor (fchown/fchmod) so the path cannot be swapped between the check and the operation.
src/bpm/safeio gains MkdirAllChown, Lchown and Lchmod (it previously had only OpenAppendChown), and the adapter's os.Chmod is replaced with safeio.Lchmod.
Trusted system symlinks
A blanket "reject every symlink" rule breaks real deployments: syslog-release documents /var/vcap/sys/log as a symlink into /var/vcap/data, and depending on stemcell and release any of sys, sys/log or sys/run may be the link. Rejecting those makes CreateJobPrerequisites fail with failed to create system files.
So a symlink at an intermediate component is followed only when:
the symlink itself is owned by root, and
its parent directory is owned by root and is not group- or other-writable.
An unprivileged container user can neither create a root-owned symlink nor replace one sitting in a directory only root can write, so a link meeting both conditions cannot have been attacker-planted. A symlink at the leaf is always refused — trust extends to traversal only, since following a leaf link is exactly what hands its target to uid:gid.
This is deliberately a structural property rather than an allowlist of absolute paths. BOSH roots are configurable (see bosh.Path, which exists so several roots can coexist on one machine for concurrent integration tests), so a hardcoded /var/vcap/sys/log literal would both miss a symlinked /var/vcap/sys and never be exercisable under a test root.
Testing
Regression specs reproduce the escape against the real entry point and assert the host target's ownership, mode and contents are never changed — leaf symlink, intermediate symlink, and an already-existing leaf behind an intermediate symlink. The trust rule is covered directly: traversal through a trusted sys/log link and a trusted sys link, plus refusals for a group-writable parent, a non-root-owned link, and a trusted-looking link at the leaf. These model the layout under the test root rather than touching the real /var/vcap, so they assert on any host instead of silently passing where the symlink is absent.
The ownership-sensitive specs Skip when not running as root, so a rootless run reports "skipped" rather than a misleading pass. Run as root on Linux:
go test ./src/bpm/safeio/... ./src/bpm/runc/adapter/...
# bpm/safeio 22 of 22 specs, 0 skipped
# bpm/runc/adapter 50 of 50 specs, 0 skipped
One trap worth flagging for reviewers: os.MkdirAll applies the umask, so a fixture requesting mode 0770/0777 yields a root-owned 0750/0755 directory under the usual umask 022. That directory is not container-writable and the trust rule correctly treats it as a trusted prefix — which silently voids any escape test built on it. The specs now set modes with an explicit os.Chmod and chown the adapter fixture to vcap.
Review feedback
CodeRabbit, /var/vcap/sys/log breakage — fixed via the ownership-based trust rule above.
CodeRabbit + Copilot, intermediate symlinks on existing volumes — fixed; Lchown and Lchmod now walk every component, and the adapter's pathname os.Chmod is gone.
CodeRabbit, coverage for an existing leaf behind an intermediate symlink — added.
@ragaskar, /var/vcap/sys breakage — addressed, and covered by a spec where sys itself is the symlink. This was the case a /var/vcap/sys/log allowlist missed, and it motivated the switch to the ownership rule.
CreateJobPrerequisites runs as root on the host before launching a
bpm container. Previously:
1. Additional volume paths were checked via os.Stat and paths were
chowned via os.Chown, both of which follow symlinks.
2. Directory creation via createDirFor performed os.MkdirAll followed by
os.Chown, which also followed symlinks.
Because these paths reside in or can be placed in directories writable
by the vcap user (such as ephemeral data directories or log directories),
a compromised container could plant a symlink to an arbitrary host file
or directory (e.g. /etc or /etc/shadow). On the next bpm restart, root-bpm
would dereference the symlink and chown the host target to vcap.
Fix:
- Added safeio.MkdirAllChown and safeio.Lchown which use os.Lstat and
os.Lchown to ensure symlinks are rejected and ownership changes do not
follow symbolic links.
- Updated CreateJobPrerequisites to verify additional volume paths with
os.Lstat, rejecting symlink paths.
- Replaced createDirFor and chownPaths with safeio.MkdirAllChown and
safeio.Lchown.
- Added comprehensive unit tests in safeio_test.go and adapter_test.go.

The change adds MkdirAllChown, Lchown, and Lchmod to safeio. These operations walk absolute paths by component and apply symlink checks. MkdirAllChown creates missing directories with mode 0700 and changes ownership through the final directory descriptor. The runc adapter uses these functions and checks additional-volume paths with os.Lstat. Tests cover trusted and rejected symlinks, path-component failures, and target integrity.
Suggested reviewers: selzoc
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 050fe
The change now stops chown and chmod from following untrusted symlinks while still allowing trusted root-owned links such as sys/log. The one remaining gap is missing tests for trusted links in Lchown and Lchmod, which could let a future regression go unnoticed. It does not block merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 939c3
The change substantially strengthens directory creation and rejects direct symlink redirection. Existing-volume handling still permits ancestor-symlink traversal and path-replacement races under attacker-writable directories. Those conditions predate this PR, but their potential host-level impact and unverified deployment assumptions warrant moderate risk.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — When host-root prerequisite setup consumes a configured path with an ancestor writable by a compromised job, symlink redirection can reach host files outside the lexical BOSH root. The independently attackable scope is the filesystem visible to that privileged setup process, rather than only the job's intended directory. Actual writable ancestors and resulting cross-job exposure depend on unverified deployment ownership and mount layout.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained production finding concerns the existing-volume branch: an intermediate symlink resolving to an existing target bypasses safe directory creation, and subsequent pathname chmod and leaf-only Lchown can act through that ancestor. Chmod also remains exposed to replacement between inspection and mutation. These conditions were already reachable through the same inspected base caller; the PR narrows direct-leaf exposure without establishing complete existing-path protection.
observed — The second retained finding is test-anchored and classified unreachable with low severity. The added intermediate-symlink fixture uses a missing leaf and therefore exercises MkdirAllChown rejection; it does not establish protection for the pre-existing existing-target branch and does not itself introduce a production entrypoint.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — MkdirAllChown pins each opened directory, rejects symlinks during traversal, uses O_NOFOLLOW to protect the check-to-open transition, and performs the final chown on the descriptor. OpenAppendChown likewise pins its leaf before chowning it. These are strong countercontrols for their respective operations, but neither the log opener nor Lchown protects mutable ancestors during later pathname resolution.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Prerequisite setup remains a sequence of shared-mount preparation, directory creation, permission changes, ownership changes, and log opens rather than an atomic transaction. Later errors stop startup but do not undo earlier filesystem mutations. A failed second log open closes the first descriptor, and directory-walk descriptors are closed on return. Re-entry reruns setup without an internal retry or rollback protocol; this partial-state model predates the PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Extend descriptor-relative path resolution to existing-volume permission and ownership updates, and to subsequent log opens where ancestors may be job-writable. Apply mutations to pinned objects, exercise existing-target and concurrent-substitution transitions, and confirm real-directory ancestry in supported deployment layouts before rollout.

The previous change checked only the leaf of each path with os.Lstat
before calling os.MkdirAll. MkdirAll resolves intermediate components
through normal lookup, so a symlink planted at an intermediate component
of a path inside a vcap-writable directory still redirects the
operation: the leaf is created under the symlink's target and then
chowned to vcap.
MkdirAllChown now walks the path one component at a time from the
filesystem root: Mkdirat, then Fstatat with AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW to
classify the component, then Openat with O_DIRECTORY|O_NOFOLLOW to
descend. Ownership is applied with Fchown on the open directory
descriptor, so the path cannot be swapped between the walk and the
chown. Components are classified with an explicit S_IFLNK check rather
than by errno, because with O_DIRECTORY set a symlink reports ENOTDIR on
some platforms and ELOOP on others.
This also rejects a legitimate symlink in the path prefix; callers must
pass paths whose ancestors are real directories.
Adds specs covering the intermediate-component case and relative paths,
plus specs that drive CreateJobPrerequisites and assert that a host
target outside the job tree is never chowned. Those require root to
observe an ownership change and skip otherwise.

It sounds like there's a potential /var/vcap/sys breakage issue here? (sounds like /var/vcap/sys is a symlink and this causes an issue with the new behavior)
Haven't looked at it deeply, but when I skimmed this PR with an agent, this was one of the problems it noted.
…hown
Addresses the review feedback on PR #234.
- Allow traversal of a symlink at an intermediate path component in
safeio.MkdirAllChown, Lchown and Lchmod when the link is root-owned and
its parent directory is root-owned and not group- or other-writable.
An unprivileged container user can neither create such a link nor
replace one, so following it cannot be attacker-directed. A symlink at
the leaf is still always refused.
This replaces an allowlist of the literal /var/vcap/sys/log. BOSH roots
are configurable (see bosh.Path), and which of sys, sys/log or sys/run
is a symlink varies by stemcell and release, so an absolute literal
both missed the reported /var/vcap/sys breakage and could never be
exercised under a test root.
- Harden existing additional volume handling: replace pathname os.Chmod
with safeio.Lchmod so intermediate symlinks are not followed during
volume chmod or chown.
- Enhance safeio.Lchown and add safeio.Lchmod, traversing path components
without following symlinks and operating via descriptors.
- Cover the trust rule directly: traversal through a trusted sys/log and
a trusted sys link, plus refusals for a group-writable parent, a
non-root-owned link, and a trusted-looking link at the leaf. These
model the layout under the test root rather than touching /var/vcap, so
they assert rather than silently passing on hosts without the symlink.
- Set directory modes explicitly in the symlink specs. MkdirAll applies
the umask, so requesting 0770/0777 yields a root-owned non-writable
directory under the usual 022 — which the trust rule correctly treats
as a trusted prefix, voiding the escape coverage. Also chown the
adapter fixture to vcap so it models a container-writable directory.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Replace the dead root check in Lchown and Lchmod.
strings.Split("", "/") returns [""], so len(components) == 0 is never true. For /, the walk runs with an empty component. Fstatat(parent, "", ...) then fails with ENOENT. The call still fails closed. The caller sees stat /: no such file or directory, not the intended cannot chown root or cannot chmod root message.
Compare cleanPath with / directly.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Extract the shared path walk from Lchown and Lchmod.
Lchown and Lchmod contain the same component walk. This includes the stat, the symlink trust decision, the directory descent, and the cleanup. MkdirAllChown contains a third variant. This code is the security boundary of the change. A future fix to one copy can miss the others. The copies already differ: only Lchmod opens non-directory leaves.
Extract one helper, for example walkNoFollow(path string, visit func(parent int, name string, st *unix.Stat_t) error) error. The helper keeps the trust rule in one place. Each caller then supplies only its leaf action (Fchown, Fchmod).

MkdirAllChown, Lchown and Lchmod each carried their own copy of the

Problem
RuncAdapter.CreateJobPrerequisitesruns as root on the host. Several of the paths it creates, chmods and chowns live in directories that are bind-mounted writable into the container and owned byvcap. Before this change those operations were all pathname-based and symlink-following:createDirFor→os.MkdirAll+os.ChownchownPaths→os.Chownos.Chmod(vol.Path, 0700)A compromised container process running as
vcapcan therefore pre-plant a symlink at a path root is about to operate on, and redirect root'schown/chmodonto an arbitrary host file — for example handing the system password database tovcap. That is a container escape (CWE-59, symlink following / link-resolution privilege escalation).Planting the symlink at an intermediate component is enough; a guard that only checks the final component still resolves the parents and follows it.
Fix
All privileged path operations now walk the path one component at a time from
/, usingopenat/fstatatwithO_NOFOLLOWandAT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, and apply the finalchown/chmodto the resulting descriptor (fchown/fchmod) so the path cannot be swapped between the check and the operation.src/bpm/safeiogainsMkdirAllChown,LchownandLchmod(it previously had onlyOpenAppendChown), and the adapter'sos.Chmodis replaced withsafeio.Lchmod.Trusted system symlinks
A blanket "reject every symlink" rule breaks real deployments:
syslog-releasedocuments/var/vcap/sys/logas a symlink into/var/vcap/data, and depending on stemcell and release any ofsys,sys/logorsys/runmay be the link. Rejecting those makesCreateJobPrerequisitesfail withfailed to create system files. So a symlink at an intermediate component is followed only when:
An unprivileged container user can neither create a root-owned symlink nor replace one sitting in a directory only root can write, so a link meeting both conditions cannot have been attacker-planted. A symlink at the leaf is always refused — trust extends to traversal only, since following a leaf link is exactly what hands its target to
uid:gid. This is deliberately a structural property rather than an allowlist of absolute paths. BOSH roots are configurable (see
bosh.Path, which exists so several roots can coexist on one machine for concurrent integration tests), so a hardcoded/var/vcap/sys/logliteral would both miss a symlinked/var/vcap/sysand never be exercisable under a test root.Testing
Regression specs reproduce the escape against the real entry point and assert the host target's ownership, mode and contents are never changed — leaf symlink, intermediate symlink, and an already-existing leaf behind an intermediate symlink. The trust rule is covered directly: traversal through a trusted
sys/loglink and a trustedsyslink, plus refusals for a group-writable parent, a non-root-owned link, and a trusted-looking link at the leaf. These model the layout under the test root rather than touching the real/var/vcap, so they assert on any host instead of silently passing where the symlink is absent. The ownership-sensitive specs
Skipwhen not running as root, so a rootless run reports "skipped" rather than a misleading pass. Run as root on Linux:One trap worth flagging for reviewers:
os.MkdirAllapplies the umask, so a fixture requesting mode0770/0777yields a root-owned0750/0755directory under the usual umask 022. That directory is not container-writable and the trust rule correctly treats it as a trusted prefix — which silently voids any escape test built on it. The specs now set modes with an explicitos.Chmodand chown the adapter fixture tovcap.Review feedback
/var/vcap/sys/logbreakage — fixed via the ownership-based trust rule above.LchownandLchmodnow walk every component, and the adapter's pathnameos.Chmodis gone./var/vcap/sysbreakage — addressed, and covered by a spec wheresysitself is the symlink. This was the case a/var/vcap/sys/logallowlist missed, and it motivated the switch to the ownership rule.
