I opened an issue hours ago and you closed it you said i should use vps for full mode and the isssue would be gone but the thing is I was already using the full mode from the start. I'll describe the problem again.

when I open steam it starts an update which is about 100MB and on about 47MB i get this log, the connection closes and the updates restarts to 0

    @(author) — sorry I conflated this with #858 (apps_script mode hitting the 50MB cap). For Full mode you're right — there's no per-fetch 50MB cap because tunnel-node's TCP stream isn't framed by Apps Script's response body limit.

    Diagnostic for Full mode 502 at 47MB:

    1. tunnel-node logs during the failure:

      docker logs mhrv-tunnel --tail 200 2>&1 | grep -iE 'error|reset|drain|eof|close'

      If you see read 16777216 bytes, dropping eof tail or session removed mid-drain, that's the same class as the bug PR fix(tunnel-node): batch drain correctness and lock contention #695 fixed in v1.9.9 — but might be a residual edge case at a different threshold.

    2. mhrv-rs side log for the failing 47MB session — paste 30 seconds around the 502:

      Specifically I want to see tunnel session XXX: ... lines. If there's a session reset by upstream or connect_data error, the issue is the destination is closing the connection (Steam's CDN may rate-limit), not us.

    3. What's your tunnel-node version? docker inspect mhrv-tunnel | grep Image. Anything before v1.9.9 has the buffer-tail-drop bug; v1.9.10+ has the fix. Pull :latest if older.

    4. Network on the VPS side: Steam CDN is geo-restricted; some VPS regions get throttled / blocked. curl -sS "https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/..." -o /dev/null -w '%{speed_download}\n' from your VPS shows raw download speed. If <1MB/s, the VPS region's pipe to Steam CDN is the bottleneck, not us.

    The ~47MB cliff is suspicious — it's not a round number, doesn't match Apps Script's 50MB cap (Full mode doesn't have it), doesn't match tunnel-node's 16MiB drain cap. Could be Steam-side server-imposed limit (anti-scraping) or VPS network buffer. The diagnostic above narrows it.

    Re-opening — paste the data above and I'll keep digging.

    @therealaleph Im using the latest version of the tunnel and the client. here are the logs for both docker and the client from the moment steam update starts to the moment it resets
    note that it reset 2 times once at the start then at about 30MB

    @(author) — confirmed bug, thanks for the precise log. The smoking gun:

    ERROR batch JSON parse error: EOF while parsing a string at line 1 column 52428630 (body_len=52428630)

    52428630 ≈ 50 MiB — Apps Script's hard response-body cap. A tunnel-node batch is producing a >50 MiB response, Apps Script truncates mid-base64, the client fails JSON parse, the session aborts, and Steam restarts the download from 0.

    We have a TCP_DRAIN_MAX_BYTES = 16 MiB cap in tunnel-node specifically to prevent this — sized so 16 MiB raw → 22 MiB base64 → ~25 MiB total batch response, well under the 50 MiB ceiling. But your log shows it being violated. Hypothesis: the cap applies only to the drain path inside drain_now, not to other op types (e.g., connect_data initial response, or some path where multiple session payloads are summed in one batch envelope).

    Filing this for investigation. The fix is a one-liner once the leaking path is identified — the per-batch envelope-build needs the same hard cap as the per-session drain. Roadmap-tracked for v1.9.16.

    Workarounds while you wait:

    1. Add Steam's CDN to passthrough_hosts — passthrough_hosts: [".akamaihd.net", ".steamstatic.com", "146.75.119.82", "104.117.76.129"]. Browser hits Steam direct via plain TCP (no MITM, no relay, no tunnel). Won't bypass Iran ISP throttle but at least bypasses our 50 MiB cap.
    2. Use Steam's "download region" setting to pick a region whose CDN serves smaller chunked responses (Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region — try EU regions, they tend to chunk at 32 MiB or smaller per response).

    Re-opening as confirmed bug (tagging as bug not not planned); will close once the fix lands in v1.9.16.

    @(author) — fix landed in v1.9.16 (just tagged, CI building).

    The 50 MiB truncation was sum-of-sessions, not per-session. With 4+ concurrent download sessions in the same batch, each contributing up to the per-session 16 MiB drain cap, total response easily blew past Apps Script's 50 MiB ceiling. Steam's parallel-chunk download pattern hits this hard.

    New BATCH_RESPONSE_BUDGET = 32 MiB total cap across all sessions in a batch. The drain loop now tracks remaining budget and stops one session short of the cliff; deferred sessions keep their buffered data and drain on the next batch (no data loss, just one batch of latency for the deferred ones).

    Once v1.9.16 publishes (~30 min), pull the new image:

    Closing as fixed. Reopen if Steam still fails after both sides are on v1.9.16.

    @therealaleph Thank you for the update. Previously, I was completely unable to update Steam no matter what I tried; now the download does start. However, after downloading approximately 66 MB, it stops and throws an error. I have attached a screenshot and the log below. (I used the “Apps Script (MITM)” mode.)
