Adds env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache (yes | no | no-negative) to the agent settings. The agent writes Cache= into /etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/10-bosh.conf at boot, defaulting to yes. On stemcells without systemd-resolved the setting is a no-op.

instance_groups:
- name: my-instance-group
  env:
    bosh:
      systemd_resolved:
        cache: no-negative

Follows the same pattern as env.bosh.ipv6: a dedicated SetupSystemdResolved method at each layer (Platform → Manager → DNSResolver), called from bootstrap.go before SetupNetworking.

Companion stemcell change (removes the now-redundant hardcoded Cache=yes drop-in): cloudfoundry/bosh-linux-stemcell-builder#781

Walkthrough

The BOSH environment now accepts systemd-resolved cache settings. Bootstrap passes these settings to platform setup before networking and returns a wrapped error if setup fails. The Linux network path forwards the settings to the DNS resolver. The systemd resolver validates cache modes and writes a cache line, with a DNS line when DNS servers are provided. Tests cover settings decoding and resolver configuration.

Suggested reviewers: julian-hj

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 1938e

The change is mergeable with awareness that networking setup now restarts systemd-resolved even for unchanged empty-DNS configuration. Avoiding unnecessary restarts remains a bounded follow-up; restart failures are already reported.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Add operator-configurable systemd-resolved cache mode" names the main change. The changeset adds the env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache setting (yes, no, no-negative), writes it as Cache= in the systemd-resolved drop-in, and wires SetupSystemdResolved through the Platform, Manager, and DNSResolver layers. The title is concise, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely. It explains what the change does and why it is needed, with a YAML usage example and the design rationale. It links a companion stemcell PR for context. It also states that the setting is a no-op on stemcells without systemd-resolved. The sections for tests run, bosh-agent release notes, breaking-change assessment, reviewer tags, and AI review feedback are absent, so the description does not fully match the template.

Resolution

Add the missing template sections: the tests run against this PR, a brief operator-facing release note, whether the change is breaking (for example, whether existing deployments that rely on the hardcoded Cache=yes drop-in are affected when the stemcell change lands), the teammates to tag, and confirmation that AI review feedback is resolved.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 18 files.

Adds env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache (yes|no|no-negative) to the agent
settings. The agent writes Cache= into
/etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/10-bosh.conf at boot, defaulting to yes.
On stemcells without systemd-resolved the setting is a no-op.

The implementation follows the SetupIPv6 pattern: a dedicated
SetupSystemdResolved method at each layer (Platform, Manager,
DNSResolver), called from bootstrap.go before SetupNetworking.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restart systemd-resolved only when the resolver config changes, and handle restart errors on the empty-DNS path.

On systemd hosts, SetupDNS now runs systemctl restart systemd-resolved even when no DNS servers are configured. At the base, the empty-DNS case returned before any restart. If that restart fails, bootstrap fails at SetupNetworking. This path has no recovery. The failure needs a systemd-resolved host where the restart fails, so it is rare, and the intended cache-mode change is deliberate.

Possible approach

Run the restart only when the rendered 10-bosh.conf content differs from the existing file. Alternatively, add a test that asserts the restart command for the empty-DNS case and decide explicitly whether its failure should abort bootstrap.

Assert the restart in the empty-DNS test.

SetupDNS restarts systemd-resolved on the empty-DNS path, but the test for that path does not check the restart. A regression that skips the restart would still pass. Add the same RunCommands assertion that the configured-DNS test uses.

🟡 Changes recommended

Bootstrap tests are missing for cache-mode forwarding, ordering before networking, and contextual error propagation, so the resolver tests would not catch broken boot-time wiring.

What changed in this PR

Adds operator-configurable systemd-resolved caching through env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache, carrying the setting through the agent’s bootstrap and networking layers.

Changes:

  • Supports yes, no, and no-negative, defaulting to yes.
  • Writes Cache= alongside DNS configuration, including when no DNS servers are supplied.
  • Adds settings and resolver tests, updates interfaces and fakes, and preserves no-op behavior on unsupported platforms.

Assert that networking is skipped when systemd-resolved setup fails.

The failure test checks only the returned error. A change that calls SetupNetworking after this failure would still pass. Add the existing fake's call-count assertion.

🔵 Needs a closer look

The cache setting is overridden by the legacy resolved-cache.conf drop-in on existing stemcells, silently ignoring both no and no-negative when only the agent is updated.

No open issues 🎉

1 previously missed issue

In code that hasn't changed since last review

Medium severity Ensure cache settings override the legacy resolved.conf drop-in

platform/net/dnsresolver/dns_systemd_resolver.go:86

On stemcells that still contain /etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/resolved-cache.conf (the file removed by the companion PR), this setting is overridden by that file's Cache=yes: systemd loads drop-ins lexicographically, so it reads resolved-cache.conf after 10-bosh.conf. Updating or repacking only the agent therefore silently ignores both no and no-negative. Please remove/mask the legacy managed drop-in or write the cache directive to a later-sorting drop-in so the option works on those images too.
