Summary

Fixes #4690 by defaulting upload_base64_image to None in OpenAIInstrumentor.__init__ and Config (aligning with opentelemetry-instrumentation-anthropic, google-generativeai, and vertexai), and supporting both synchronous and asynchronous callables in _process_image_item.

Root Cause & Problem

When OpenAIInstrumentor was initialized without an explicit upload_base64_image callback (the standard behavior when using OpenAIInstrumentor().instrument() directly or via zero-code opentelemetry-instrument):

  1. upload_base64_image defaulted to lambda *args: "" which is a synchronous function returning a string.
  2. Because this default lambda is truthy, _set_prompts entered _preprocess_base64_images whenever an input message contained a base64 image.
  3. In _process_image_item, await Config.upload_base64_image(...) attempted to await the string returned by the synchronous lambda, throwing TypeError: object str can't be used in 'await' expression.
  4. The @dont_throw decorator on _set_prompts caught and swallowed this TypeError, abruptly aborting execution before reaching _set_input_messages(span, messages).
  5. Consequently, gen_ai.input.messages was completely omitted from the resulting span for any request containing base64 images.

Technical Solution

  1. Updated upload_base64_image default in OpenAIInstrumentor.__init__ to None with matching type annotation Optional[Callable[[str, str, str, str], Coroutine[None, None, str]]] = None.
  2. Initialized Config.upload_base64_image to None in opentelemetry.instrumentation.openai.shared.config.
  3. In _process_image_item, handled both awaitable and synchronous callbacks using inspect.isawaitable(upload_result) so that synchronous upload functions do not raise a TypeError when provided.
  4. When Config.upload_base64_image is None (the default), _preprocess_base64_images is skipped and _set_input_messages maps base64 data URIs directly to standard OTel blob message parts with modality="image".

Test Plan

Added automated regression unit tests in packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_vision.py:

  • test_vision_default_uploader_config: verifies that OpenAIInstrumentor() initializes Config.upload_base64_image to None.
  • test_process_image_item_uploader_handling: validates _process_image_item across all three cases (no uploader returns untouched item; synchronous uploader returns URL without TypeError; asynchronous uploader awaits and returns URL).
  • test_set_prompts_preserves_input_messages_without_uploader: verifies that _set_prompts populates gen_ai.input.messages with blob type image content parts when upload_base64_image is not configured.
  • Existing vision tests (test_vision, test_vision_base64, and event tests) all continue to pass.

Validation commands executed:

  • uv run ruff check . (passed with 0 errors)
  • uv run pytest tests/traces/test_vision.py (9 passed in 2.48s)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Image upload callbacks can now run synchronously or asynchronously when processing vision inputs.
    • Without an uploader configured, image data remains available for tracing.

Walkthrough

The OpenAI instrumentation now defaults the image uploader to None. Image processing preserves image items when no uploader is configured and supports both synchronous and asynchronous uploader callbacks.

Changes: OpenAI image uploader handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional uploader configuration
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/config.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_vision.py
The instrumentor and configuration set the uploader to None by default. Tests check the default and verify that prompt messages retain base64 image content when no uploader is configured.
Image item processing
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/chat_wrappers.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_vision.py
Image processing uses synchronous callback results directly and awaits awaitable results. Tests cover both callback types and the no-uploader path.

Explanation

[#4690] Requirement: when no uploader is configured, keep base64 image inline in gen_ai.input.messages (or use a URI when an uploader is configured). Covered by the changes:

  1. OpenAIInstrumentor.__init__ default for upload_base64_image changed from lambda *args: "" to None. The truthy synchronous default no longer enters the image upload path.
  2. Config.upload_base64_image initialized to None in shared/config.py, with type Optional[Callable[[str, str, str, str], Coroutine[None, None, str]]].
  3. _process_image_item in shared/chat_wrappers.py calls inspect.isawaitable() on the uploader result. It awaits awaitable results and uses synchronous results directly. This removes the TypeError path that @dont_throw previously hid.
  4. Per the PR description, with None the path _preprocess_base64_images is skipped. _set_input_messages then maps base64 data URIs to OTel blob image parts, so gen_ai.input.messages is set.
  5. Tests in tests/traces/test_vision.py cover the default None, the no-uploader, synchronous-uploader, and asynchronous-uploader cases of _process_image_item, and _set_prompts output with no uploader (blob, image modality, PNG MIME type, encoded content).
The async uploader path used by the Traceloop SDK is preserved. The None default matches the workaround in #4690. Evidence is the change summary, the PR description, and the test descriptions. I did not run the tests. Behavior of _set_input_messages for the None case is taken from the test description and the PR description, not from a separate diff read.

Explanation

All reviewed changes relate to #4690:

  • opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/__init__.py: one-line default change to None with matching type annotation. Directly required.
  • opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/config.py: Config.upload_base64_image default and type updated, Coroutine import added. Directly required.
  • opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/chat_wrappers.py: inspect import and awaitable check in _process_image_item. Directly required for synchronous uploader support.
  • tests/traces/test_vision.py: regression tests for the default, the uploader handling, and the gen_ai.input.messages output. Supporting tests for the requirement.
No unrelated refactoring, documentation, or feature work appears in the reviewed summary. The ignored file packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/uv.lock matches the !**/*.lock exclusion. It was not inspected. It does not bear on any issue requirement, so it does not affect this verdict.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Run synchronous uploaders outside the event-loop thread.

If a synchronous uploader performs network I/O, this call blocks the event loop until the upload finishes. achat_wrapper awaits request handling before it starts the OpenAI request, so concurrent async requests on that loop also stall. Run synchronous callbacks in a worker thread, then await the result if the callback returns an awaitable. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Include synchronous uploaders in the callback type.

The changed annotation requires a coroutine result, but test_process_image_item_uploader_handling supplies a callback that returns str. A type checker will reject this supported callback. Update this annotation and the OpenAIInstrumentor.__init__ annotation to accept str | Awaitable[str]. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
