fix(voyageai): capture span attributes for positionally-passed arguments - #4694
Problem
The VoyageAI instrumentation reads request data only from kwargs. The Voyage SDK documents embed(texts, model) and rerank(query, documents, model) as positional calls. With positional arguments, spans lose gen_ai.request.model and all prompt content (embed texts; rerank documents and query).
Fix
Bind the call's args and kwargs to the wrapped method's signature (inspect.signature(...).bind_partial) before reading request attributes. If binding fails, fall back to kwargs, so behaviour never gets worse.
Tests
Added tests/test_positional_args.py with embed and rerank cases. They stub the network layer (no API key or cassette needed). They fail on main and pass with this change. Full voyageai suite: 6 passed. Lint (ruff check): all checks passed.
Before / after (reproduction with a stubbed client, client.embed(["hello"], "voyage-3")):
Before: span had only gen_ai.operation.name='embeddings', gen_ai.system='voyageai', gen_ai.usage.input_tokens=7 — missing gen_ai.request.model, gen_ai.prompt.0.role, gen_ai.prompt.0.content.
After: gen_ai.request.model='voyage-3', gen_ai.prompt.0.role='user', gen_ai.prompt.0.content='[{"type": "text", "text": "hello"}]'.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Voyage AI telemetry now captures model and input details correctly when embed and rerank arguments are passed positionally, for both synchronous and asynchronous calls.
Voyage AI instrumentation now resolves positional and keyword arguments for synchronous and asynchronous calls. New tests check span attributes for positional embed and rerank calls.
get_call_arguments binds positional and keyword arguments to the wrapped callable’s signature. If inspection or binding fails, it returns a copy of kwargs.
Use resolved arguments in wrappers packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-voyageai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/voyageai/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-voyageai/tests/test_positional_args.py
Both wrappers use resolved arguments for request and input-content attributes. Tests check span attributes for positional embed and rerank calls.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the change: the VoyageAI instrumentation now captures span attributes for arguments passed positionally. The raw summary confirms that the change binds positional and keyword arguments through get_call_arguments, and the added tests cover embed and rerank called with positional arguments. The title names the fix and the affected component, and it matches the main change. It is a single, specific sentence with no vague terms.
